Air Travel to Langkawi

It’s hard to forget the experience of the flight just before landing into Langkawi’s International Airport. Since the first time I had that experience, every time we fly back to Langkawi, I would ensure that I get a window seat on the right either in front (like row number 7 in Air Asia) or at the back so that the wings don’t block the view.

The last five minutes flight is simply amazing. You will see how the plane flies above the many islands on the emerald waters of Andaman Sea many of which are like mountains jutting out of the water. And as the plane descends towards the runway, you will see the full curved stretch of the famous Pantai cenang Beach .. an awesome view.

More than the flying experience, it’s the convenience why we often prefer to fly into Langkawi. If you are coming from mainland Kedah, Penang or a neighboring country like Thailand, the other good option is to take a Ferry Service.

Flying Time To Langkawi
Let’s look at the flying time from various places to Langkawi:
1) Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi: 1 hour 10 minutes Approx.
2) Penang to Langkawi: 35 Minutes Approx.
3) Singapore to Langkawi: 1 hour 25 minutes Approx.

Flights to Langkawi
While there are not many airlines that operate to Langkawi, the ones that operate actually more than make up for the demand with their frequency and service.

Air Asia
This is the most popular and no-frill low cost airline operating to Langkawi. They have direct and regular service to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Singapore. Via Kualalumpur, many other places can also easily connect with Langkawi by air, and they are Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai etc from India, Gold Coast, Syndey, Melbourne, Perth of Australia, Chengdu, Shanghai, Beijing of China, Osaka, Tokyo of Japan, Seoul of South Korea, Taipei of Taiwan etc.

I have availed their service several times and found them to be punctual and quite good. Only one thing they are quite finicky about is the weight of your luggage and the handbag. Ensure that you don’t exceed the prescribed size of the handbag or else it will be added to the check in baggage. Also it must not exceed 7kg in weight. Ladies vanity bag and laptop are not considered as handbags.

You should pre-pay for the weight of your check-in luggage when you buy the tickets or check in your luggage online. If you want to weight and pay on the spot, the charges are much higher. Similarly, pre-book your meals and get good discounts. If you try to order in flight, you may not get the choice of your food and also need to pay more.

Update March 2015: Air Asia has confirmed its plans to create a new international hub in Langkawi. It will place five aircraft at Langkawi airport which will initially cater to Asean countries and later expand its routes to Indian and China.

While you can call up their Service Centers at various places all over Asia to plan your trip & booking, you will get the promotional offers only through their website.
